Celebrating a Jubilee
On October14th, students and faculty of Our Lady of the Pillar also celebrated Father’s jubilee year with a special Mass and reception. Father’s homily was very moving as he took us on his Christian journey and encouraged us all to let the light of Jesus shine in our lives. During the service, students read their special thoughts about why they love Father Tobin. At the end of the Mass he was presented with a spiritual bouquet of 50 prayers. The card was designed by Mrs. Warmke and each student and faculty member signed a prayer balloon. A reception followed the Mass in the Parish Life Center in which Father received 50 balloons and a box of Bissinger’s candy. Each student also had a special treat, a brightly decorated cookie personally handed out by Fr. Tobin!
Father Tobin chose to become a priest when he was eighteen years old. He enjoyed the experience of church when he was younger and wanted to go into the priesthood for two reasons. The first reason was to get closer to Jesus through Mary and the second was to help others get closer to Jesus through Mary. He wanted to be a light. It took Father Tobin fifteen years in the Society of Mary to be ordained as a priest. None of his ancestors were ever priests. He said that the most rewarding thing about becoming a priest is celebrating the Eucharist, serving people, and bringing people close to Jesus. He said the most challenging part is (quote from St. Paul) “putting on Christ everyday.” The highlights of his priesthood had been serving at Saint Louis University Medicine, spending time in India, and being pastor at Our Lady of the Pillar. He has traveled all around the world to places like Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, and India. We are truly fortunate to have him here and we all hope we will get to spend many more memorable years with him. --Panther Prints v9i1 |
