1996 Summer Olympics

The Summer Olympic games were held in Atlanta, Georgia. Muhammad Ali lit the Olympic tourch. Slovene gymnast Leon Stuklj arises at the opening ceremony as one of the oldest living sportsmen in the world at age 97. The sports softball, beach volleyball, mountainbiking, and women's football debut in the 1996 Olympics. A total of 197 nations were represented at the games. About 10,318 athletes were also present. The United State won the most metals. the US got 44 gold medals, 32 silver medals, and 25 bronze medals totaling 101 medals. Alexei Nemov, a gymnast had the most medals out of the men. He has 2 gold medals , one silver medal, and three bronze medals. Amy Van Dyken from the United States got the most medals out of all the women. She got four gold medals for swimming. During the 1996 Summer Olympics a very upsetting tradegy took place. On July 27 there was a terrorist bombing in the Centennial Olympic Park. Two people died and one-hundred eleven people were injured.

Exciting Event in Golf

Tiger Woods suprised the crowd at the Masters with a 12 shot victory. He became the first Master winner of African American descent. That day he set the record for lowest to-par score of -18 and the lowest 72 hole score of 272. He earned 2,066,833 dolars in the PGA tour. Tiger Woods was named the PGA Player of the Year. He also rose to the number one rank spot in June , in only his 42nd week as a professional.His ascent to the number one spot was the fastest ever in professional golf.
