In 1970 Earth Art was very popular. Robert Smithson was one of the founders of earth art. earth art is also known as land art or earth art is a form of art which uses items from the natural environment, such as rocks, sticks, soil and plants. Particularly large works are sometimes known as earthworks. Some other artists who did earth art are Hans Haacke, Michael Heizer, Neil Jenney, Richard Long, David Medalla, Robert Morris, Dennis Oppenheim, and Gunther Uecker.

In 1971 a lot of the art was class work. In 1971 Pilchuck Glass School was founded by Dale Chihuly, a glass artist, and Anne Gould Hauberg and John H. Hauberg. Because of its founding, the school was simply a plot of forest in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains in Washington. Today, the school is recognized as the international center for glass art education. The school's glass art making facilities have developed greatly since the founding of the school and provide tools for instruction in all areas of glass making. These facilites are regarded as some of the best in the world. The school's unique curriculum emphasizes immersion in art and creativity while requiring teamwork and collaboration between all students and faculty.

In 1972 Graffiti became a new American art form created by African Americans and Latino teens. A Puerto Rican sociology student, Hugo Martinez, established the United Graffiti Artists (aka UGA) in 1972. Prior to the creation of the UGA, graffiti was considered only as vandalism. The following summer, graffiti art, formerly found only in the streets, was introduced to upscale galleries in Soho, New York. This created a new respect for graffiti in the wonderful world of art.

In 1973 Pablo Picasso died of a heart attack. Also in 1973 Alexander Calder, an American sculptur and painter, was hired by Braniff International Airways to paint a full-size DC-8-62 as a "flying canvas."

In 1974 some greaat painters, Juan Bautista Garcia, Milton Menasco, and James Henry Govier died. Sir Roy Strong became the director of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Sir Roy Strong was an English art and cultural historian, writer, broadcaster and landscape designer.
