Literature

As the decade passed, literature reflected the conflict of self-satisfaction with 50's Happy Days and cultural slef-dought about conformity and the true worth of American values. Some authors indicated the power of the individual to control his or her fate, two being Norman Vincent Peale and Bishop Fulton J. Sheen. Also, Science Fiction became more popular with the actual possibility of space travel. The youth during the 1950s enjoyed the stories of such authors as Dr. Seuss, Robert McCloskey (A Time of Wonder), and Ludwig Bemelmans (Madeline books). Older children read books such as Amos Fortune, Free Man by Elizabeth Yates, Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham, and The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare. In addition to these fine authors one other writer form the fifties era emerged as a children's favorite for generations to come. This author was known as E. B. White whom wrote Charlotte's Web.
