President Harry S. Truman
In 1934 he was elected for Senate and in July 1944 he was nominated to run for Vice President With President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. On January 20, 1945, he took the vice-presidential oath. Unexpectedly 82 days later on April 12, 1945, Roosevelt died. Truman was sworn in as the 33rd President of the United States. Truman left presidency and retired to Independence in January 1953. Truman died on December 26,1972, and Bess Truman died on October 18, 1982. They are buried side by side in the Library's courtyard.
