Clothes in the thirties were simple and conservative. Women had to sew and mend their clothes for they couldn't afford to buy clothes. After the roaring twenties the hemlines on women's clothing dropped to their ankles and stayed there all through the decade. Many actresses inspired styles such as the Bette Davis and Greta Garbo dresses. Hairstyles got longer and took a more feminine look.Curls around the face were a popular hairstyle.The Joan Crawford dress became popular which was won in the evening. Skirts were designed wih great detail and tight around the waist. Fur was very popular in the thirties. Women and girls would wear fur to appropriate outings. When women wore hats, they were worn on an angle. The pillbox hat was a square hat that fit right on top of the head. Many shoe styles were invented in the thirties such as rounded toes with wide thick heels,pumps and flats with ankle straps or heels,slip-on,lace-up,and buckle shoes. Zippers became widespread for they were cheaper than buttons. The handbags were very similiar to the ones in the twenties. Beaded and enameled mesh bags were popular. During the middle of the thirties, leather bags started to become popular. Men's clothing was very simple because they all didn't have jobs and no money to afford new clothes. Men mostly wore jeans, old rag shirts, hats, and leather boots. The men's suit was very hard to buy.
