Fads and Fashion

As the 1910's came into view, women began to look for a more comfortable way to wear their clothing. Fabrics became lighter, color became brighter, and styles became looser. As the hobble skirt faded, women's necklines became lower. However, the men wanted to be more conservative.

At home, women wore the Tea Gown, which was characterized by unstructured lines, light fabrics, and frothy detail. Its sleeves were long and flowing, was made of gorgeous material and easily went on. It is not as much as an outfit for the "tea-table" as it is for dinner with family. A picture of the Tea Gown is show below.

 

Tea Gown

During the 1910s, men wore striped trousers, a morning coat, and a starched white shirt. Top hats and frock coats (also called Prince Albert frock) were also worn. Frock coats were characterized by At home they wore informal lounge suits, tweed jackets and striped blazers.
